A.P.E.D.E.D – Association pour l’education des Enfants Défavorisés

Our organisation is dedicated to supporting underprivileged communities in Mauritius and Rodrigues through a range of educational and empowerment programmes. The programmes offered by the association include early childhood education designed for children from underprivileged backgrounds and remedial classes for primary school children. Each year, six children receive sponsorship for their tertiary education. Additionally, the organisation distributes school supplies and basic necessities to secondary school children. History

Founded in 1996, A.P.E.D.E.D. works with underprivileged children from various regions of the islands of Mauritius and Rodrigues. The association reaches out to children who are not attending school due to poverty, guiding them towards local schools and covering all their educational needs. Since its inception, A.P.E.D.E.D. has been providing academic support and school supplies to primary school children in precarious situations. In 2007, a commercial programme for cultivating and producing medicinal teas ("SECRETS GRAND-MÈRE") using plants from Mauritius was launched to support mothers in generating income.

Objectives

Our Vision:

Mauritius should achieve a 100% literacy rate.

Our Mission:

To provide underprivileged children with the opportunity to access education by offering the necessary support.

Our Objective:

To reduce poverty through education.

Main achievements

Every year, between 100 and 150 children attend our pre-primary programme free of charge. Thirty of these children are supported on an annual basis. More than 50% of A.P.E.D.E.D. children have gained access to secondary education. Among them, 25% have received school supplies, 50% of secondary school children have passed their HSC, and six underprivileged students are supported at the tertiary level each year.

Children from Rodrigues have gained access to pre-primary education, and around thirty women manage a business in Rodrigues. In 2017, 90 men and women from Rodrigues were trained in social entrepreneurship and the production of plant-based products, including spices, herbal teas, candles, soaps, and potpourris.

We produce our own renewable energy through solar panels, and a portion of the electricity generated is sold to the Central Electricity Board (CEB).

Sources of funding

Through corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, annual fundraising campaigns, and various other fundraising activities. We have also achieved partial financial self-sufficiency with our plant-based products and photovoltaic panels.
