History

Action Familiale was founded in 1963 by Monsignor Margéot to provide essential services in modern natural family planning, human development, and sexual education for both adults and youth. The NGO aims to foster strong, stable families and a harmonious society through education, counselling, and support, regardless of religious affiliation.

Objectives
  • Serve Mauritian families through comprehensive human development training, based on fundamental family values.
  • Teach modern, scientific, and reliable natural family planning methods to interested couples.
  • Address societal issues such as AIDS, domestic violence, early pregnancies, and drug abuse by making prevention a key objective.
  • Promote respect for life.
Main achievements

Action Familiale has significantly addressed the overpopulation problem in Mauritius, with its methods now recognized for their reliability. In 2006, unplanned pregnancies among trained couples were as low as 2%. Annually, the organisation recruits around 2,000 new users, and many testimonials highlight the positive effects of Natural Family Planning (NFP) on their relationships. Courses for young people are welcomed in both government and private, including religious, educational institutions. Unfortunately, the growing demand for Action Familiale's services exceeds its capacity.

Sources of funding

Action Familiale receives financial support through an annual government grant-in-aid, individual and corporate donations, and various projects.

Number of Beneficiaries: Action Familiale serves over 20,000 users, with the following distribution: 50% Hindus, 33% Christians, 12% Muslims, and 5% others. Depending on available resources, it is estimated thar some 7,000 to 12,000 young people are reached annually.
