Founded in 1970 by a group of parents of young people with mental disabilities and their friends, APEIM was born out of a deep personal connection to the cause. These parents recognized that, in Mauritius and elsewhere, children are born with mental disabilities. They were aware of the challenges faced by families of individuals with mental disabilities and decided to join forces to inform and assist these families while advocating for the rights of people with mental disabilities in the country.
APEIM believes that with early care, appropriate education, vocational training, and supportive environments, individuals with mental disabilities can become valuable citizens, capable of earning a living, even modestly, and integrating into society.
