History

Kinouété was founded in 2001 to address a gap in the rehabilitation and reintegration of incarcerated women. In 2005, the programme expanded to include incarcerated men. Since its inception, Kinouété has impacted over 5,000 individuals, including inmates, ex-inmates, their family members, youth, and children, through a personalised rehabilitation and reintegration programme.

Objectives

Kinouété aims to enhance the skills and rehabilitation of inmates (both men and women) through various activities, ensuring a more positive process of reintegration and re-entry into the community.

Main achievements
  • 2001: Established the Listening and Discussion Group at the Women's Prison.
  • 2004: Initiated Group Therapy and Individual Counselling at the Women's Prison.
  • 2004: Inauguration of the Centre.
  • 2005-2006: Extended Group Therapy and Individual Counselling services to Beau-Bassin and Petit Verger Men's Prisons.
  • 2005-2006: Began contact visits with parents and children.
  • 2006: Established a Therapy Group at Richelieu Open Prison.
  • 2006: Public Exhibition of items produced by incarcerated women.
  • 2007: Launched the Empowerment Programme (vocational training in hairdressing, aesthetics, crafts/embroidery, computer skills) at the Women's Prison.
  • 2010: Advocacy for legal measures regarding the payment of fines for inmates; Successfully advocated for the release of a female inmate; Vocational training in hairdressing and makeup for ten former female inmates at La Chrysalide; Assisted 17 former female inmates in successfully resuming employment.
  • 2017: Affiliated with the ARASA (AIDS and Rights Alliance for Southern Africa), extending Kinouété's activities in drug and HIV prevention, aligning with ARASA's primary focus areas.
  • 2017: Lowered the target beneficiary age profile from 35-45 years to 25-35 years.
  • 2017: Strengthened presence in RYC/CYC.
