Association Les Enfants d’Abord
The Association les Enfants d'Abord focuses on the artistic development of children in Rodrigues. Established with the mission to foster artistic talents among children, the association provides training in various art forms including dance, music (piano, drums, guitar, and music theory), and theatre.
- Dance and Music Training: The association offers classes in dance and music, covering instruments like piano, drums, and guitar, as well as music theory.
- Theatre Workshops: Children are introduced to the basics of theatre and performance, allowing them to explore their creative expressions.
- Live Performances: The association organizes live shows in underprivileged villages, bringing joy and entertainment to local communities.
The Association began its journey in 2009 with around 20 children who performed a show for Mother’s Day. The success of this performance and the children’s growing interest in the arts led to the formal creation of the association, with significant support from parents.
The primary focus at the beginning was to introduce children to singing and dancing. With generous support from Mauritius Telecom, Mutual Aid, and Wong so & Ass., the association expanded its activities across three locations in Rodrigues: Baie aux Huitres (the headquarters in the North), La Ferme (in the West), and Mont Lubin (in the centre). These locations offered classes in singing, music (piano, drums, guitar, and music theory), dance, and theatre.
The number of children involved in the programme grew from 30 to 80. Due to financial constraints, activities at Mont Lubin had to be halted in 2016. However, as of August 2021, the centre continued to serve around 30 beneficiaries. The association remains dedicated to nurturing the artistic talents of children and providing them with opportunities for personal and creative development.
The primary objective of Association les Enfants d'Abord is to provide artistic training to children, helping them develop into responsible and talented young individuals. The association aims to nurture their talents, enabling them to succeed in life. Children involved with the association have the opportunity to participate in the exams of the Royal School of Music, furthering their formal education in the arts.
The school aspires to become a nursery for future artists, fostering creativity and artistic skills. Through live shows in underprivileged villages, the association's members aim to bring joy and cultural enrichment to the communities they serve.
The association has acquired its own sound system, allowing the beneficiaries of the programme to perform in various locations. Thanks to the Trust Fund, the association has a dedicated building in Baie aux Huitres, where all classes are held, and which serves as the headquarters.
A team of seven instructors conducts various courses in Baie aux Huitres and La Ferme. Since January 2011, children have been learning singing, traditional dance, piano, drums, guitar, theatre, and music theory. In 2011, flute classes were also provided to the residents of Shelter, a state-run home for disadvantaged children located near the headquarters. However, these activities ceased after the shelter was relocated two years later.
The association receives financial support from various private sponsors.
