History

Autisme Maurice was established in November 2009 and officially registered as an NGO on February 26, 2010, by the Registrar of Associations. The association was founded by parents of children with autism and other developmental disorders to address the lack of support and awareness in the community. The primary mission is to combat ignorance and indifference towards autism while providing much-needed support and educational structures for affected children.

 

A significant milestone in the organisation’s history was the twinning agreement signed with Autisme Réunion on April 2, 2011. This partnership resulted from a successful meeting at a conference on autism held in May 2010 on Réunion Island. The collaboration has not only increased local media attention on the cause but also provided access to advanced expertise and training from professionals at Autisme Réunion. This has significantly enhanced the services and support structures available for autistic individuals in Mauritius.

Main achievements
  • Autisme Maurice has opened specialised autism schools in Berthaud, Quatre-Bornes, and Calodyne.
  • The organisation established an autism diagnostic centre in 2012.
  • Autisme Maurice won the "Social Entrepreneurship Awards 2015" organized by the Ministry of Social Security and SBM. Additionally, they received the Jury's Choice Award at the "Barclays Colours of Life Award 2015."
