Dr Idriss Goomany Centre for the Prevention and Treatment of Alcoholism and Drug Addiction

The Idriss Goomany Centre focuses on comprehensive care and support for individuals who use drugs. Services offered
  • Primary prevention: Implementing educational programmes to prevent drug use.
  • Outpatient treatment: Providing medical and psychological care for individuals dependent on drugs, including alcohol.
  • Reintegration: Assisting drug users in rejoining society through rehabilitation programmes.
  • Rapid HIV testing: Offering quick and confidential HIV testing.

 

All services are provided free of charge.

 

Beneficiaries: Since its inception, the Idriss Goomany Centre has served over 5,000 individuals addicted to heroin, offering them vital support and treatment services.

History

The Idriss Goomany Centre was established in April 1986 in response to a significant surge in heroin and brown sugar (a form of adulterated heroin) consumption in Mauritius. The centre was founded to address the growing substance abuse problem and provide essential support services to those affected​.
