Eastern Welfare Association for Disabled

The Eastern Welfare Association for Disabled in Mauritius offers adapted education for children with disabilities and specialised training for young adults. The programmes focus on practical skills and craftsmanship within a dedicated craft workshop. Committed to inclusivity, the association empowers individuals to thrive and prepares them for potential employment opportunities.

History

The idea behind the creation of the Eastern Welfare Association for Disabled was to advance the education of children with disabilities within a dedicated building in Bel Air Rivière Sèche. In 2004, a school for children and a care centre for young adults were established. Today, the school includes four classes organised by different levels of disability, each overseen by a specialised teacher. The association is managed by an executive committee of nine members, two auditors, a director, and volunteers. In 2010, the NGO moved into its new premises, consisting of a building for the school and another for the craft workshop, thanks to the support of the Beau-Champ sugar estate and Anahita (Ciel Group).

Objectives

The primary objective of the Eastern Welfare Association for Disabled is to offer children adapted education, enabling them to become autonomous and learn a trade. The goal is to help them enter the workforce and achieve independence.
