Fraternité Mauricienne des Malades et Handicapés (FMMH)

At Fraternité Mauricienne des Malades et Handicapés (FMMH), we are dedicated to providing our physically disabled students with access to sports, recreational, and educational facilities in their environment, along with wellness services. Our mission is to ensure that they can access places where young people of their age typically gather, preventing them from feeling excluded from the activities their city, village, and neighbourhood offer simply because they use wheelchairs. We envision a just and inclusive society where individuals with disabilities feel welcomed and valued.

To support the well-being of our adult members, we organise social events that allow them to dance without fear of ridicule and hold discussions on disability-related topics. By providing access to facilities and promoting inclusivity, we strive to improve the quality of life for our members and ensure they can participate fully in their communities. Our commitment extends to hosting educational talks to raise awareness and foster understanding about disabilities. At FMMH, we are committed to fostering an inclusive community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive and feel a sense of belonging.

Our wheelchair basketball team won the Indian Ocean Club Champions Cup held in Madagascar in 2019.

History

Since its establishment in 1976 by Father Henri Souchon, FMMH has worked tirelessly to support individuals with disabilities from all religious backgrounds. Following a meeting with women in distress, we decided to establish a school for their children with disabilities. From that moment on, education became our top priority.

Fraternité Mauricienne des Malades et Handicapés (FMMH) was officially registered with the Bureau of the Registrar of Associations on September 13, 1979, under Registration No. 1527. Since 1981, FMMH has been located at 175 Royal Road, GRNW - Port Louis, occupying parts of the land (lots 1110 and 1111).

Objectives

Our objective is to promote the well-being and integration of individuals with disabilities into Mauritian society and economy. We aim to advocate for, gather, and appropriately utilise support and financial aid through a network of government agencies and private enterprises to achieve this goal.
