Joie de Vivre Universelle (JDVU)

Joie de Vivre Universelle (JDVU) is a dedicated therapy centre offering a range of therapeutic services for children with mental impairments. Our services include occupational therapy, speech therapy, physiotherapy, psycho-motor therapy, and clinical psychology, all provided in a multi-sensory environment on a one-to-one basis. Additionally, we manage a centre that caters to elderly individuals with dementia, Alzheimer's, and other mental deficiencies, ensuring comprehensive care and support for all our clients.

Academic Programme

At JDVU, the educational needs of each child are addressed by specialised educators who tailor their approach to the individual requirements of the child and their family.

 

Paramedical Services

JDVU offers a variety of therapies for the therapeutic management of children. The main therapies provided include:

  • Occupational therapy to promote independence and autonomy for a fulfilling life using specific techniques to achieve client-centred goals. It focuses on gross motor skills, fine motor skills, activities of daily living (e.g., dressing, eating), sensory issues, academic skills, pre-vocational and vocational skills, life skill training, and play skills.
  • Speech and language therapy to address speech and language delays, swallowing difficulties, articulation and phonological disorders, and drooling.
  • Psycho-motor therapy to help children with body scheme issues, spatial orientation and organisation, and difficulties in attention and concentration.

 

Other Services

To complement our existing therapeutic team, we bring in foreign experts in various fields that are not present in Mauritius, such as neuro-paediatricians and child psychiatrists. We have also introduced new therapies, including:

  • Multisensory therapy based on the SNOEZELEN concept.
  • TEACCH method: treatment and education of autistic and communication handicapped children
  • ABA method: Applied Behavioural Analysis.
  • Sensory integration techniques.
  • In the near future, we plan to introduce the HANDLE (holistic approach to neurodevelopment and learning efficiency) method to further enhance our therapeutic offerings.
History

Joie de Vivre Universelle (JDVU) was founded in December 2008 with the mission to provide individual therapies for children and seniors with mental impairments such as Autism, Down Syndrome, Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's. We also aim to train primary caregivers to better support their loved ones.

  • December 23, 2008: Registered as an NGO.
  • January 1, 2009: Organised a belly dance show to raise funds for the project.
  • January 4, 2010: Received accreditation from the National Corporate Social Responsibility Committee.
  • October 1, 2011: Opened the Therapy Centre.
  • January 1, 2014: Opened the SEN School.
  • November 1, 2014: Opened the Training Centre.
  • November 11, 2014: Opened the JDVU Therapy Centre (MQA Approved).
  • April 2018: Opened a recreational centre for elderly people specializing in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's in Barthelmy Ohsan St, Beau Bassin.
Main achievements

2015: Won the Barclays Colours of Life Award, recognizing our outstanding contributions and commitment to improving the lives of individuals with mental impairments.
