La Courte Echelle School is an NGO founded in 2002 by two concerned mothers. The goal of its creation was to provide a specific support structure offering educational opportunities to children struggling academically. This education aimed to help them fully develop their potential both at school and in everyday life.
The school's first class officially opened in September 2002, with two students, a specialised teacher, and an assistant. Thanks to the support of student families and donors, as well as the dedication of volunteers and teachers, the school has significantly expanded. It has broadened its reach to accommodate other types of disabilities. Numerous children with behavioural disorders (hyperactivity, hyperkinesia, attention deficit disorder, etc.), hearing impairments, and learning difficulties (dyslexia, dysphasia, dyspraxia, etc.) have joined the school.
As of March 2018, the school had 21 students, 1 educational director, 1 medical director, 4 teachers, and 3 assistants.
La Courte Echelle School is dedicated to combating the exclusion of children with special needs by providing specialised education tailored to their requirements. This education seeks to address the specific educational needs of each child, aiming for their autonomy, personal development, and overall well-being.
Children, once more afforded the opportunity of becoming students, are able to progress at their own pace in an environment similar to ordinary education, thanks to a combination of educational, medical, and psychological support that allows for individualised teaching.
To achieve its objectives, the school employs professionals and enlists the help of qualified volunteers. Our organisation is structured around three key areas: Administrative Division, Educational Division and Medical and Psychological Division.
As of March 2018:
- 21 students were enrolled at La Courte Echelle.
- In addition to classes in mathematics, languages, and computer science, students participated in various workshops including soccer, swimming, tennis, yoga, theatre, and clown classes.
- The educational team consisted of an educational director, four teachers, and three assistants.
- The medical team included a medical director (neuropsychologist), two psychologists, two physiotherapists, two speech therapists, one occupational therapist, and one general practitioner.
La Courte Echelle is registered with the National CSR Foundation under the number NCSRF/2017/0288. This registration enables us to receive financial support from both Mauritian and French companies that believe in the importance of our mission in Mauritius. These companies understand the significance of providing a future for children with special needs. Some sponsor a child for one or more academic years, while others contribute through CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) donations, which are crucial for our future.
These CSR donations are essential to our continuity and the quality of support and guidance we aim to offer our students and future students. In the 2016/2017 academic year, they accounted for a significant portion of our income, representing 50% of our total revenue.
The remaining 50% of our funding comes from a combination of:
- Tuition fees imposed on parents, adjusted according to their financial resources to reduce student absenteeism.
- Private donations.
- Fundraising events.
- Assistance from the Ministry of Education.
