History

Lakaz Lespwar (LKL) is located in Solitude, near Triolet, in the north of the island. It was inaugurated in October 2010. The organisation's objectives are to alleviate poverty through various development and community projects.

In 2008, seventy-five families from different poverty pockets were provided with homes in the NHDC Résidence Solitaire complex in Solitude. These families previously lived in very difficult conditions, with a single 12x20 room for 4 to 6 people, lacking privacy and adequate space for children to study.

In 2009, a small group of Caritas volunteers, after consulting with parents through several open meetings and door-to-door visits, realised the urgent need for a safe and communal place where the community could benefit from activities such as sports, training projects, learning, and budget planning. Thus, LKL began with the listening service and the breakfast project.

Key Milestones:

  • 2010: Inauguration of the Lakaz Lespwar Centre.
  • 2012: Establishment of the community garden.
  • 2013: Opening of the clothing shop.
  • 2015: Launch of the food shop and the personal development programme.
  • 2016: A psychologist started visiting the centre once a week.
  • 2019: Introduction of a weekly listening service.
  • 2021: A life coach began helping beneficiaries achieve their projects/goals. Additionally, a health service was established, including a volunteer nurse visiting the centre twice a week and making home visits to bedridden individuals, supported by a volunteer doctor who offers advice when needed, and three women who assist.

Lakaz Lespwar Caritas continues to grow and adapt to the needs of the Solitude community, providing essential services and support to improve the quality of life for its residents.
