Living with Endometriosis

Living with Endometriosis is an association dedicated to raising awareness about endometriosis and its impact on individuals. The organisation aims to provide comprehensive education on the condition, offering detailed information and resources to help those affected understand and manage their symptoms. Vital support and practical advice are available to ensure individuals with endometriosis do not feel alone in their journey. Additionally, the organisation works to foster inclusive workplaces by promoting policies and practices that support employees living with endometriosis, helping to create a more understanding and accommodating work environment.

History

Founded and registered in December 2017, Living with Endometriosis started its activities in March 2018.

Objectives
  • To raise awareness of endometriosis and its impact on an individual’s life among the general public.
  • To educate adolescent girls about endometriosis.
  • To provide support, advice, and information to women suffering from endometriosis.
  • To collaborate with the business community to foster inclusive and supportive workplaces for women with endometriosis and promote related research projects.
Main achievements
  • Delivered a talk in the ‘Workshop to Brainstorm on Strategies to Increase Fertility Among Young Couples’ organised by the Ministry of Health (MoH).
  • Conducted awareness talks in over 20 women’s centres around the country with support from the National Women’s Council, the Ministry of Gender, and the Ministry of Health.
  • Launched awareness campaigns in the media (TV and radio) and published articles in the local press.
  • Enhanced social media communication through the Facebook page: Living with Endometriosis Mauritius.
  • Hosted Facebook Live sessions during the COVID lockdown.
  • Produced an MFDC video/movie featuring interviews with sufferers and a gynaecologist.
  • Delivered a speech at the Endometriosis conference organised by FormaCare.
  • Participated in the Ministry of Health campaign and the Defi Caravane de Sante.
  • Conducted awareness and educational talks in colleges including BPS, MGI, and Loretto Convent Curepipe.
  • Held an awareness and educational talk at the University of Mauritius.
  • Organise bi-monthly support group meetings with women suffering from endometriosis.
  • Created a WhatsApp group for continuous support to women and families living with endometriosis.
  • Held the Endometriosis Day Workshop on 26 March 2022, launched by Dr K. Jagutpal, Minister of Health, focusing on themes such as Endometriosis and Fertility, and Public Healthcare Institution Services.
  • Provided advice on workplace issues with support from the Ministry of Labour (MoL).
  • Hosted a support group meeting with Dr C. Gaud, Senior Advisor, Ministry of Health and Wellness, in April 2023.
  • Conducted talks in companies, accompanied by gynaecologists, at organisations such as Mautourco, Consolidated Fabrics Ltd, Le Meridien Hotel, Westin Hotel, FRCI, MCB, Avantor, HSBC, GSA, FSC, Scott Ltd, and others.
  • Supported University of Mauritius (UoM) students doing dissertations on endometriosis-related research problems.
  • Published a research article with UoM researchers at the Faculty of Medicine: "Learning to live with endometriosis: Findings from a phenomenological study among women in Mauritius, a state in the Indian Ocean," International Journal of Africa Nursing Sciences, Volume 17, 2022. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ijans.2022.100473
Sources of funding

Living with Endometriosis is primarily funded by donations from its founding members, which cover the expenses for organising awareness campaigns and counselling sessions. Additionally, the organisation seeks sponsors and donors, such as Scott Ltd., to fund various projects.
