History
  • 1959: Establishment of the association.
  • 1961: Land acquisition for development of a specialised school.
  • 1972: Establishment of the specialised school.
  • 1974: Vote of the Act of Parliament.
  • 1991: Creation of the Day Centre.
  • 1999: Establishment of the sheltered workshop.
  • 2004: Recognition by the Ministry of Education as a specialised school.
Objectives
  • To promote education and enhance educational opportunities for children with intellectual disabilities.
  • To assess and develop the intellectual capacity of children in academic and technical work.
  • To develop children's potential for further integration into the Mauritian society.
  • To provide support to families of individuals with intellectual disabilities.
Main achievements

The Mauritius Mental Health Association offers a range of specialised programmes to support the growth and development of individuals with intellectual disabilities. These programmes include:

  • Section I: Educational programmes for children aged 5-8 years.
  • Section II: Educational programmes for children aged 8-12 years.
  • Green Class: Specialised classes for children aged 8-13 years.
  • Section III: Educational programmes for adolescents aged 12-17 years.
  • Atelier: Vocational training for young adults aged 17-25 years.
  • Day Care: Day care services for individuals aged 17-40 years.

 

All participants engage in dance, music, theatre, sports, and puppet classes, promoting a well-rounded development.
