History

In 2016, a group of volunteers came together to address the social issues affecting child psycho-social development in Baie du Tombeau, such as juvenile delinquency, crime, street children, and school drop-outs. A series of stakeholder meetings were conducted, including one on February 6th where the police, village council members, and community workers teamed up to establish a common platform, which eventually became known as Shree Ji (Mauritius).

In its efforts to empower children and youth, Shree Ji began offering free tuition in March 2016. The organisation also provides children with clothes, shoes, books, and toys to ensure that every child and young person has access to quality education regardless of their background. Recognising the importance of nutrition, Shree Ji has started serving hot meals (lunch) to the children.

As Shree Ji evolved, it realised that behind each child’s suffering, there is often a mother struggling as well. Consequently, Shree Ji expanded its mission to advocate for the empowerment of both women and children under a single umbrella.

The organisation was officially registered as a Non-Governmental Organisation in 2017. Shree Ji primarily operates in the region of Tombeau Bay (Baie du Tombeau) and works closely with the government, other NGOs, and CSR bodies.
