Since 2009, Konekte runs a “Service d’Ecoute” within the school premises and one of the focal points since 2018 is the prevention and intervention of suicidal behaviours at school.  Since the covid-19 pandemic, Konekte has observed in 15 of the colleges they intervene, an increase in the number of depression and suicidal behaviours among students.  The pandemic has taken a toll on the mental health of our young students and there is a need to get everyone around them onboard so that cases are managed in the most appropriate manner.

Launching of new suicide prevention programme in colleges

To achieve that, Konekte is planning to launch a new suicide prevention programme that aims at creating awareness among parents, educators, rectors and students on suicidal behaviours at school and learning how to identify warning signs of suicide attempts, depression, how to handle a suicide attempt among other, debunking myths around suicide, develop the psychosocial abilities of students and reinforce the “Service d’Ecoute” through a new training and propose the service to new colleges.

Post suicide attempt management

Emilie Duval has worked on a “Manuel de Postvention” that will be launched shortly, that elaborates on how to handle a suicide attempt or death by suicide so that it does not lead to other attempts and soothes the suffering.

Koneke encourages more referrals of students at risks or experiencing vulnerabilities to the “Service d’Ecoute” and provide continuous training of the members of the service to better manage such situations.

Funds needed

The prevention campaign on its own costs Rs 1.2 million and includes the printing of posters, making of videos that will be posted on social media, the making of fridge magnets among other items.

The post suicide management aspect on the other hand costs Rs 1 million.

Konekte is currently seeking funds to start the prevention campaign.  If you want to help contribute to creating a safer place for student, you can get in touch with Konekte on 460 2919 or through their website: https://konekte.mu.
