Alcooliques Anonymes

Alcooliques Anonymes (A.A.) is an association of men and women who share their experiences, strength, and hope with each other to solve their common problem and help others recover from alcoholism.

The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees; we are self-supported through our own contributions.

A.A. is not allied with any sect, denomination, political entity, organisation, or institution; it does not wish to engage in any controversy, nor does it endorse or oppose any causes. Our goal is to stay sober and help other alcoholics achieve sobriety.

History

The Mauritian branch of Alcooliques Anonymes opened in 1980, founded by a group of individuals struggling with alcohol dependence who were eager to promote sobriety. Currently, about a hundred members are active on the island and regularly attend meetings.

Alcooliques Anonymes is a leading organisation in the fight against alcoholism. In the United States, Bill and Bob were the pioneers. As alcoholics themselves, desperately seeking a way out, they discovered that individuals with alcohol dependence could stop drinking if they grouped together and accepted their powerlessness over alcohol.

By following a 12-step programme, they underwent a profound transformation. Over the years, Alcooliques Anonymes has successfully communicated the understanding that alcoholism is a disease.

Groups formed across different states in the United States and Canada. Today, if an abstinent alcoholic travels, they can find a support group anywhere in the world, including in Mauritius.

Objectives

Supporting those who wish to stop drinking.

Alcooliques Anonymes (A.A.) is dedicated to helping individuals who want to quit drinking. Although not a religious organisation, we receive support from various religious institutions, which provide us with venues for our weekly meetings.

Main achievements

Currently in Mauritius, we have hundreds of members who have been abstinent for several years. Even though not all of them are active within the organisation, we can proudly say that these individuals have experienced the joy of sobriety and have regained their dignity and place within their families and society.

Internationally, the 2020 statistics for Alcooliques Anonymes are as follows:

  • 129,750 support groups across approximately 180 countries.
  • 2,138,200 members worldwide in 2020.
Sources of funding

We do not accept any external funding and do not seek sponsors. This is the rule for this association worldwide.
