Mahebourg Espoir Education Centre

Mahebourg Espoir Education Centre provides non-formal education for disadvantaged adolescents (both girls and boys) from Mahebourg and the southeastern region of Mauritius. The centre is a member of the ANFEN (Association for Non-Formal Education) network in Mauritius.

Services offered
  • Educational Support: The centre caters to adolescents (both girls and boys) aged 12 to 18 who have been excluded from the traditional primary education system. It provides non-formal education at various levels following the ANFEN curriculum, organised in small groups.
  • Diverse Activities: The centre offers a range of activities including football, judo, athletics, handicrafts, sewing and embroidery, patchwork, baking and cooking, gardening, carpentry, music, dance, excursions, and an annual camp.
  • Nutrition Support: Adolescents receive breakfast before joining their group activities, and a meal is also provided at noon.
  • Psycho-social support is available three days a week, provided by a psychologist and two social workers.
History

Mahebourg Espoir Education Centre is an integral part of Mahebourg Espoir, an NGO established in 2009. The organisation fights against all forms of exclusion and extreme poverty.

Objectives
  • To restore dignity and self-esteem to each individual.
  • To help young people discover their talents, develop healthily, and prepare to enter the workforce.
Main achievements
  • January 2011: Opening of Mahebourg Espoir Education Centre (MEEC) in Mahebourg.
  • June 2013: Relocation of the centre to Ville Noire at the Centre Cardinal Margéot.
  • 2014: Creation of an activity village, primarily funded by the EU/DCP with the help of some CSR contributions, on land obtained from Compagnie Beau Vallon Ltée.
  • March 27, 2015: Inauguration of the Activity Village.
  • 2015-2016: Creation of a vegetable garden and sports fields; establishment and opening of the MEEC Boutique.
