The Mauritian Wildlife Foundation is recruiting a Horticulturist
Main responsibilities:
1. Manage and maintain the plant nursery, ensuring proper care and cultivation of native and endemic plant species.
2. Propagate plants through various methods such as seeds, seedlings, cuttings, and grafting.
3. Develop and implement innovative techniques for plant propagation and cultivation.
4. Collaborate with the conservation team to identify priority species for propagation and habitat restoration.
5. Assist in the design and establishment of native plant gardens and restoration sites.
6. Manage data systems, perform data entry and analysis, and prepare accurate reports to track the progress and outcomes of rare plant conservation efforts.
7. Monitor and assess plant health, implementing pest and disease management strategies as needed.
8. Provide training and guidance to volunteers and staff involved in horticultural activities.
9. Contribute to research initiatives related to plant conservation and habitat restoration.
10. Foster effective communication with stakeholders, including regular updates, collaborations, and information sharing on rare plant conservation initiatives.
11. Produce reports, participate in proposals, and support fundraising initiatives, follow budgets, supervise staff and volunteers, oversee procurement, and support the overall operation of the flora conservation projects.
Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree in botany, conservation biology, ecology (or a related field) and/or a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience working in the sector.
• Proven experience in horticulture, preferably in a conservation or restoration setting.
• Knowledge of propagation techniques and plant care. • Strong organizational and project management skills.
• Ability to work effectively independently and collaboratively.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal and collaboration abilities.
• Strong data management and reporting skills.
• Be a proficient user of Microsoft Office and have knowledge of GIS.
• A clean manual driving and/or motor bike license is essential.
• Physically active and can work outdoors in different conditions, locations, and terrains.
• Be flexible with working at odd hours when required.
• Genuine interest in flora.
