Seabird and Invasive Species Control Intern


Ile aux Aigrettes
Mauritian and Overseas Applicants (ref IRP-Invasive Intern)

We are seeking a passionate and dedicated individual to join our Islands Restoration Programme.
You will collaborate with conservation biologists to enhance seabird attractant initiatives and control current and future animal invasive species affecting restoration work on Ile aux Aigrettes.

Job Brief

Contribute to the ongoing conservation efforts on Ile aux Aigrettes.
Gain a unique experience in conservation in supporting the seabirds and invasive species project.
Collaborating with a dynamic Field team from various backgrounds local and international.

The Intern will gain experience and skills in:
• Control of tenrecs, through intensive systematic island wide searches and the placement and management of traps.
• Control of the Indian wolf snakes (couleuvre) Lycodon aulicus and house shrews (rat musqué) Suncus murinus and any other invasive species found.
• Biosecurity checks of the island to detect and remove new incursions of invasive animals.
• Set up of the seabird attractants (decoys, call back) and monitor with camera traps
• Basic routine maintenance of project facilities.
• Accurate data collection/entry and data management software.

Requirements
• HSC or Diploma in Biology or related subjects.
• Have proven experience or exposure relating to invasive species management is an advantage.
• Be physically fit and able to stay focused on repetitive work in a hot and humid environment.
• Be ready to adapt to unforeseen circumstances with initiative and due care.
• Highly self-motivated and conscientious person.
• Have good written and spoken English.
• Have a knowledge of spreadsheet applications and data management.
• Be able to work independently with minimum supervision and as part of a team setting.
• An advantage to hold a manual driving license.
