In the context of its Community Development Program, Bioculture Cares Ltd is implementing two projects: the Benares Community Development Project and the Ferney Community Garden Project. Supported by a concise Action Plan for 2025, The Ferney Project focuses on the empowerment of women in the southeast region of Mauritius, supporting them in developing alternative livelihoods through an Empowerment Program and skill-building in agricultural practices. To ensure the success of these efforts, Bioculture Cares seeks the expertise of an Agronomy Consultant to support the development, implementation, and sustainability of the Ferney Garden Community Project.
OBJECTIVE:
- To provide agronomy expertise to enhance farming practices, ensure sustainability, and build the capacity of its members to manage and maintain the garden effectively.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct an Assessment of current agricultural practices and resources.
- Support the establishment and management of the community garden and provide coaching and training on crop selection and rotation, land preparation, and planting techniques as and when required.
- Develop a sustainable farming plan and/or Calendar tailored to local environmental conditions and available resources.
- Monitor the progress of the garden’s development, including the effectiveness of farming techniques and overall crop yield.
KEY DELIVERABLES:
- Assessment and Recommendation Report
- Farming Plan
- Quarterly Update
REQUIREMENTS:
The consultant should have:
- A degree in Agricultural Science or any other related field.
- At least 5 years of experience in organic farming practices.
- Experience working with individuals from low-income households is highly desirable.
- Commitment to evidence-based practice and capacity to adapt to local context.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Fluency in Mauritian Creole.
HOURS AND FREQUENCY OF CONSULTANCY:
- The consultancy will be of a long-term nature, encompassing assessment, planning and follow up.
- The exact duration of the consultant's involvement will be determined in collaboration and based on the project's specific needs.
